EngageMedia at Global Voices Summit 2019: Challenging Digital Authoritarianism

On June 2, 2019, journalists, bloggers, digital activists, and researchers from the Asia-Pacific gathered together in Taipei, Taiwan for the Global Voices Asia-Pacific Citizen Media Summit to share experiences, gain knowledge, and form new collaborations. Global Voices is an international and multilingual community of bloggers, journalists, translators, academics, and human rights activists and a long time ally of EngageMedia.
It was a sunny day, and the morning looked promising as we walked into the venue, the auditorium of NTU Institute of Applied Mechanics in Taipei. The summit was equipped with simultaneous translation and live streaming for the wider audience. We live-tweeted the proceedings and the hashtag #GVAPSummit2019 even trended for a while.
The summit addressed issues like internet rights and activism, digital security and privacy, digital inclusion and development, all across two main themes: “The rise and challenges of digital authoritarianism in the Asia Pacific” and “Citizens’ response to digital authoritarianism.”
In his keynote speech, Prof. Shih-Hung Lo, the professor of National Chung Cheng University (Taiwan), Department of Communication, presented examples of digital authoritarianism in China.
Prof. Shih-Hung Lo: “Will the Internet change China or will China change the Internet?”
In the afternoon plenary session, Andrew Lowenthal, Executive Director of EngageMedia, spoke about the citizen responses to digital authoritarianism in the Asia-Pacific.
He introduced to the audience what we do and why we do it. This was an opportunity to explain why we believe that video and online technologies have great potential for advocacy, especially in countering the challenges posed by the authoritarian regimes. He also explained that open source software can be used not only for privacy and security but also as an effective social change tool.
Most crucially, he warned about the invasiveness of corporate social media in our day-to-day lives and challenged the audience with some thought privative statements.
Andrew Lowenthal: “Using Facebook to promote digital rights is like eating McDonald's to promote vegetarianism.”
He then shared examples of how EngageMedia walks the talk by internally using open source and secure alternatives to corporate technologies. These include using Mattermost instead of Slack, Nextcloud instead of Dropbox, PGP-secured Thunderbird instead of Outlook, Redmine instead of Sharepoint, Signal instead of Messenger, and so on.
Another provocation he put forward to spark conversation was the following:
"Liberal democracies will protect us from digital authoritarianism.”
An audience member from the Green Citizens’ Action Alliance (Taiwan) responded: “Now, in Taiwan, we are anxious about our presidential election next year. We are worried about becoming the next Hong Kong!”
Others agreed that many so-called liberal democracies are resorting to options like internet shutdowns and censorship. Authoritarian regimes are using the popular discourse of “cybersecurity” and “fake news” to strengthen their control over the internet.
Lowenthal emphasised the need to create networks of like-minded activists, video makers, journalists, and artists:
“We need movements to pressure decision makers. We need relationships, organising, and effective communications to build movements.”
But how do we do move forward using technologies that are being used to repress us at the same time? We at EngageMedia continue using and exploring non-corporate platforms and revisiting old-school approaches like RSS, newsletters, and communicating offline. We believe these efforts contribute to keeping spaces open for critical thinking, dissent, and discussion.
So what is the future of digital rights in Southeast Asia? “A lot depends on the public awareness of digital rights & cybersecurity,” a panelist responded.
“However, censorship & surveillance have always been with us. It’s just that the technology is new. But we don’t have to be pessimistic.”

Central America Trip #20

Mary is no longer available for RV traveling, but we remain good friends.Sadly Mary is struggling with health issues. The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails RV Resort in La Conner, Washington. I’m scheduled to depart here July 9th.
Today… A trip down memory lane!
2004 Central America trip…
This trip ended up being 343 days and 16,000+ miles through the back-country of Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama. 11 rigs started the trip, within a week we broke into three smaller groups for ease of traveling. Only myself and one other rig went the full, pre-planned route. All the others dropped out for various reasons. All returned safely to the United States. I’m planning to show these photos, more or less, 10 a day, whenever I’m not doing something else deserving a blog entry. FINALLY, it must be remembered these photos are prior to my switching to digital in 2006. The films were developed during our trip and the lack of quality control sometimes is plainly evident.

Britney Spears' Father Sues Blogger for Defamation Over #FreeBritney-Related Allegations

Jamie Spears says a mob of fans has been attacking the family over the singer's conservatorship, which has been in place since 2008, and one blogger's allegations crossed a legal line.

Britney Spears' father has been in control of her personal and business affairs as her conservator for more than a decade — and now a renewed effort by fans to #FreeBritney has sparked a defamation complaint.

Jamie Spears was appointed Britney's conservator in 2008, and says from time to time groups have made false statements and questioned whether the arrangement was in the singer's best interest. But this time, he's taking legal action.

"It's time for the conspiracy theories about Britney Spears' well-being and the mob #FreeBritney movement to stop," states the complaint. "Over the past few months, Britney and her father Jamie have sat by while fans have accused them of numerous false and malicious things, including attempts to mislead the public with the content that appears on her social media."

According to the complaint, filed Wednesday in Los Angeles County Superior Court by Larry Stein and Ashley Yeargan of Russ August & Kabat, a blogger named Anthony Elia has "been one of the loudest voices in that crowd."

Jamie Spears claims Elia has made it his mission to ensure Britney's conservatorship ends without any information about the reality of the situation.

Elia alleged in a June 14 blog post that Britney's team was deleting positive comments on her Instagram page to make sure negative comments got more attention and described it as "a human rights violation." His claims were picked up by MSN, Us Weekly, In Touch, Perez Hilton and others, according to the complaint. In addition to the blog post, Elia also posted several tweets and retweets spreading the allegations. The next day, he posted that the negative comments were gone and the positive comments reappeared. Spears' lawyers argue that nothing was deleted in the first place and that it's actually impossible to re-post deleted comments on Instagram.

"Enough is enough," states the complaint. "It is time that Elia understands that his words have consequences and he cannot blindly spout his baseless theories any longer."

Jamie Spears, as conservator of Britney's estate, is suing for defamation and false light invasion of privacy and asking the court for actual and punitive damages and an injunction barring Elia from republishing or otherwise disseminating the statements.

Elia on Thursday sent The Hollywood Reporter a statement in response to the complaint: "I am forever blessed and I have faith that good always wins. I have no further comments, except that I love Britney and the Britney army."

Indonesian bloggers now have more options to earn a living with Japan’s Cyberbuzz

(Updated on January 29th: Ad network Interspace Indonesia is a portfolio company of CyberAgent Ventures. It is more correct to mention ad network MicroAd Indonesia which is a portfolio company of CyberAgent Group.)

Japanese internet compay Cyberbuzz entered Indonesia yesterday with the launch of blogger advertising network Bina Blog, or B Blog for short. Indotelko cites the team’s ambitious target to recruit 15,000 bloggers in Indonesia by November, and earn between IDR 500 million ($41,000) to IDR 1 billion ($82,000) every month in the first six months of operation in Indonesia. How do they plan to do that?

According to Bisnis, Cyberbuzz is collaborating with Indonesia’s financial service firm Corfina to build B Blog. It earns money by becoming the bloggers’ advertising agency. Advertisers can choose which blog category they want to advertise on, whether it’s gaming, fashion, or sports.

Advertisers would then be able to monitor how influential the blogs are by page views and user conversions. The team has so far tied in cooperation with 100 advertisers, of which 50 percent come from Japan, 30 percent from Indonesia, and the rest from other countries.

Besides earning money by working with B Blog, bloggers are also invited to join various launch events and get free product samples for them to write about. Bloggers who can rack up more than 10,000 monthly visits are considered premium.

B Blog will face local blog network Idblognetwork 1 to make sure the Indonesian bloggers – an estimated 20,000 throughout the country – are well fed. Back in October, Idblognetwork had about 12,000 bloggers, resulting in 180 million aggregated monthly impressions.

Cyberbuzz is a portfolio company of Cyberagent Group in Japan. Another CyberAgent Group portfolio company making an entrance in Indonesia is digital ad network MicroAd Indonesia. The latter is a joint venture project between Japan’s MicroAd and Indonesia’s Corfina.
